Digital education: teaching and learning how to be safe online
Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Snapchat, instant messaging… Probably these social medias are part of your child’s daily routine. Kids have been spending more hours with smartphones, tablets and other devices than ever before and parents should teach their kids how to use technology in a conscious and responsible way.
How many hours per day does your child spend on their smartphone? Do you know whom they talk to once online? How much information does your child share about their own personal life? Do you trust the sources they reach out for school studies?
If you cannot answer those questions, then you should start thinking about filling in this gap. Either way, they must be warned about the risks of over-exposing their lives on the internet. For instance, child grooming refers to “befriending and establishing an emotional connection with a child, and sometimes the family, to lower the child’s inhibition with the object of sexual abuse”. Sharing “special” photos with a trusted friend might also end up badly, given the complexity to secure data traffic over the web.
Parents should approach social media as one would with any other physical environment in their child’s life: establish rules, limits and encourage safe playing time.
Therefore, rather than trying to ban children from joining online networks, parents should encourage them to learn it safely through digital literacy. If we are serious about taking advantage of the potential benefits of digital learning, then we need to appropriately resource our schools and teachers as well. Because children mimic behavior, be vigilant with your own social media usage as well. Stimulate their access to educational apps, games, and toys that foster thinking and problem-solving. Most importantly, sit together and play with them! Have fun!
Bear with the fact that the millenniums have not known the world without the internet. So, upgrade yourself and learn to take the best and safest advantage of proper digital education.
